Wisdom Teeth Removal
in Calgary
Relief from painful, crowded or impacted wisdom teeth, with a clear plan and a comfortable visit.
About Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the back of your mouth. They usually appear between the late teens and early twenties. Many mouths do not have enough room for them, so they can come in crooked, partly covered by gum or stuck beneath the surface. These are called impacted wisdom teeth, and they can cause pain, infection and damage to neighbouring teeth.
If you are concerned about your wisdom teeth, our team in SW Calgary can examine them, review your X-rays and explain whether they need to come out. Wisdom teeth removal is part of the general dentistry care we provide at West 17th Avenue Dental Care.
Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need to Come Out
- Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw.
- Red, swollen or tender gums around a wisdom tooth.
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully.
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste.
- Repeated infection under the gum flap covering a partly erupted tooth.
- Decay in a wisdom tooth or in the tooth beside it.
- Crowding or shifting of your other teeth.
If you have severe pain, facial swelling or a fever, call us right away. We reserve same-day time for urgent cases through our Emergency Dentist service.
When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. If a wisdom tooth is healthy, fully in and easy to clean, your dentist may simply monitor it. Removal is usually recommended when a tooth is impacted, infected, decayed or causing pain or crowding. Regular X-rays at your Dental Checkups help us watch your wisdom teeth and recommend removal at the right time. Some complex cases may need a specialist, and if that applies to you, we will explain why and help arrange it.
Before Your Wisdom Teeth Removal
- Tell us about your health history, all medications and any allergies. Do not stop a prescribed medication unless your dentist or doctor tells you to.
- Follow the eating and drinking instructions we give you for your type of anaesthesia or sedation. If none are given, have a light meal beforehand.
- If you choose sedation, arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home. Oral sedation requires this. See Sedation Dentistry.
- Wear comfortable clothing and avoid smoking before your appointment.
- Stock up on soft foods, ice packs and any pain relievers your dentist recommends.
- Plan to rest for the remainder of the day, and for a day or two if you are having several teeth removed.
What Happens During Wisdom Teeth Removal
Consultation and X-rays. Your dentist examines the teeth and explains your options.
Anaesthesia. We numb the area thoroughly.
Removal. Your dentist removes the tooth, using the same careful approach as for any Tooth Extraction. Impacted teeth may require a small incision in the gum.
Aftercare. We place gauze, give you written instructions and answer your questions before you go home.
Aftercare and Recovery
- Rest for the first day and avoid strenuous activity.
- Bite gently on the gauze as directed, and do not disturb the blood clot.
- Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling and take pain relievers as directed on the label.
- Eat soft, cool foods and avoid hot, crunchy or spicy foods at first.
- Do not smoke, use a straw or rinse hard, as these can lead to dry socket.
- Keep your mouth clean by following the rinsing instructions your dentist gives you.
- Call us if pain gets worse after a few days, if bleeding does not stop, if swelling keeps getting worse or if you develop a fever.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Healthy wisdom teeth that have come in fully and can be cleaned easily may not need to be removed. Your dentist will monitor them and recommend removal if problems develop.
How do I know if my wisdom teeth are impacted?
Impacted wisdom teeth may cause pain, swollen gums, bad breath or trouble opening your mouth, but some cause no symptoms. An X-ray is the only way to know for sure, so a dental exam is the best next step.
Can I have wisdom teeth removed with sedation?
Yes, if you feel anxious, speak with us about sedation options at your consultation. Your dentist will recommend the approach that is right for you.
How long is the recovery after wisdom teeth removal?
Many people feel better within a few days, although some swelling and soreness can last longer, especially after the removal of impacted teeth. Following your aftercare instructions helps you heal comfortably.
How much does wisdom teeth removal cost in Calgary?
The cost depends on the number of teeth and how difficult they are to remove. Call (403) 244-1124 for an estimate. We bill most major insurance plans directly and offer 0% interest financing.
