About Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces consist of brackets bonded to each tooth and connected by a wire that is periodically tightened to apply gentle, consistent pressure — gradually moving teeth into the correct position. While Invisalign has grown in popularity, braces remain the most precise orthodontic treatment for complex cases and are often the recommended option for growing teenagers.

Modern brackets are smaller, smoother, and more comfortable than older designs. Many patients also enjoy personalizing their treatment with coloured elastics at each adjustment visit.

What to Expect

1

Orthodontic Assessment

We take X-rays, photographs, and digital models to assess your bite, jaw development, and create a detailed treatment plan.

2

Bracket Placement

Brackets are bonded to each tooth and the archwire is threaded through and secured. The appointment takes about 1.5–2 hours.

3

Adjustments

Every 6–8 weeks, you visit us to have the wire adjusted. These appointments are brief (15–30 min) and are where most of your tooth movement happens.

4

Debond & Retainer

When treatment is complete, brackets are removed and a retainer is provided to maintain your new smile permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does treatment with braces take?

Most patients wear braces for 18–24 months. Simple cases may be shorter; complex cases involving jaw growth or severe crowding may take longer.

Are braces painful?

There is typically soreness for 2–3 days after each adjustment as teeth begin to move. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods help. Irritation from brackets rubbing cheeks lessens as the soft tissue toughens.

Do I need to wear a retainer after braces?

Yes — permanently. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original positions. We provide a custom retainer to be worn nightly long-term. This is the most important step to protecting your orthodontic result.
